GroundHog

Take a Hike Animals

The groundhog, sometimes called a Woodchuck or a Whistle Pig, is the only animal with its own holiday-February 2! Having old orchards and fields for foraging and woods for hibernating, Owl's Hill is perfect groundhog habitat. The Groundhog is a master burrow builder. Burrows can be up to 6 feet deep and 20 feet long. Old burrows provide important winter shelter for other animals. Groundhogs eat grasses, nuts, fruits and vegetables all spring and summer long. They get so fat from eating they waddle. During their deep winter hibernations they will lose up to 30% of their body weight. Babies, called chucklings, are born in the spring deep in a burrow. In order to prepare them for a solitary life, the mother takes them to separate individual burrows before they are fully weaned.
