| The raccoon, sometimes called coon or ringtail, is the state animal of Tennessee. Being nocturnal mammals, raccoons sleep during the day in the woods in hollows curled up in balls. At night, they hunt for food. At Owl's Hill tiny handprints in the mud around the ponds or along the creek indicate the raccoon has been searching for his favorite foods frogs, crayfish, turtles and insects that live in the water. A raccoon will eat almost anything; this is one reason it is such a successful animal. With their tiny hand-like forepaws, the raccoons can pick locks, unlatch bird feeders, open garbage cans, peel corn and catch fish.

The raccoon is one of the most vocal night animals and during mating season will scream, mew, growl and whistle. |
