Aquatic Ecology: (Through September and after April 15)
REQUEST A PROGRAM
A hands-on, feet-wet study of an aquatic habitat:

Wade into the pond or follow the stream to collect specimens for identification

Study the life cycles of amphibians and aquatic insects
-
Practice insect classification
-
Perform simple qualitative water quality tests; you may bring equipment to do a quantitative study if you wish
-
Observe interesting finds with a microscope
-
Cost: $5/student, $50.00 minimum.

Limit two class per visit; one studying the pond, the other monitoring the stream.

Forest Ecology: (August - May)
REQUEST A PROGRAM
Students experience Tennessee forest ecosystems first hand:

Explore forest ecosystems

Identify different species of forest trees and plants

Learn to identify trees using leaves, bark and a field guide (autumn and spring)
-
Use twigs, bark and a dichotomous key for identification (late autumn and winter)
-
Includes some "classroom" study, then adjourns to the trails to practice the newly gained skills.

Winter provides burrows, fossils and tracks

Spring offers nesting birds, mating amphibians, and paths of wildflowers

Visit varied habitats, including old orchard, pond and forest

Observe the signs and effects of human activity on the property through the years

Ridge Line Hike: (August through May)
REQUEST A PROGRAM
Experience the Eastern Deciduous Forest as it must have appeared to Tennessee's first settlers.

Begin in a Locust-lined creek bed

Hike up the Beech and Maple forested hillside

Look out from the Oak and Hickory covered ridge top.

Exposed ledges reveal limestone, shale, and chirt layers.

Spring hikes include the beauty of a forest floor covered with early blooming wildflowers
-
Moderately strenuous hike; sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

Who Cares about Pollinators? (August through mid-October, April, May)

Use an observation beehive to create interest in pollination:

Find out how honey from a beehive ends up on your biscuits.

Understand the life cycle of honeybees

Learn how flowering plants and pollinators depend on each other

Experiment with hand pollination
