Volunteer

Owl's Hill has a very small paid staff, but we are fortunate to have a strong, active volunteer staff serving in many capacities, from Trail Guide to Nest Box Monitor to Gardener.

BECOME A TRAIL GUIDE
Next Training Session: Thurs. in Jan.
Begins Jan. 10, 2013, 9 am to 1 pm

 

 

Owl's Hill hosts numerous groups each year for programs focusing on everything from trees to salamanders and including every age from toddlers  to ???. Tours are led by trained Trail Guides.

Trail Guide Training Classes:**

  • Are held twice a year, in September and January.
  • Consist of several meetings which combine a short lecture/discussion with a hike.
  • Include an Owl's Hill notebook covering local nature topics and Sanctuary policies.
  • Lead to the opportunity to shadow experienced guides before "soloing."

 Trail Guides should:

  • Have a love of the outdoors and a desire to share that love with others.
  • Possess the physical ability for light to moderate hiking AND/OR
  • Be willing to present a lecture or lead art/craft and literary components of programs
  • Be at least 21 years old and agree to a background check.
  • Anticipate leading 8-10 tours in the autumn and again in the spring

Once trained, guides choose their own assignments to suit their personal schedules and interests.

**Volunteers may begin at any time by shadowing trained guides and then attending the next training session.

BECOME A NEST-BOX MONITOR
Season begins in March

 

 

During the bird nesting season, nearly 40 bird nesting boxes must be monitored weekly.  Volunteers have assisted with this project since its inception.

Monitors:

  • Clean and repair boxes for the beginning of the nesting season.
  • Check each box weekly for nests, eggs, nestlings and fledglings,  March - August.
  • Clean and repair boxes between nestings throughout the summer.
  • Collate and forward all nesting information to the Cornell Nestbox Project.
  • Clean and repair boxes at the end of the season to prepare for winter roosting.

Volunteers at Owl's Hill also:

  • Help maintain the Visitor Center and Butterfly gardens.
  • Assist with office projects like bulk mailings.
  • Prepare new teaching exhibits.
  • Participate in Free the Trees and other grounds maintenance projects.
  • Engage in  Citizen Science activities like bird and butterfly counts
  • Share ideas and so many other skills!

It requires many skills to keep a nature sanctuary operating smoothly.
