Barn Owl
The Barn Owl
Tyto alba | Length:14" Wingspan:44"

The Barn Owl is becoming increasingly uncommon in Tennessee because of habitat loss. Its preferred nesting site is old farm buildings, but it will occasionally use chimneys or tree cavities. Its diet is 95% mice. The Barn Owl's call can be an eerie long drawn out scream, a raspy hiss, or a snore.

Bands resembling silver bracelets are clipped to the bird's leg. The data on the band tells the finder when and where the bird was banded.
