2008 Adult Programs 2008

 

Wildflower and Foliage Hikes

During October and April, the Owl’s Hill Wildflower Specialists lead weekly afternoon hikes for adults only. Both groups and individuals may register for these hikes; there is no minimum group fee. The cost is $7/person; walks begin promptly at 1 pm.

Groups wishing to schedule one of these hikes at another time may do so for a fee of $7/person with a $50 minimum, pre-paid please.  Click here to request a date.

October Trails

Tucked into a hidden valley in the midst of urban sprawl, Owl’s Hill offers the perfect afternoon get-a-way to enjoy the glory of autumn in Middle Tennessee. Trail guides lead guests through the woodland trails, along the creek or up the ridge allowing plenty of time for photos, plant, bird and butterfly identification or sheer enjoyment of the view. If you have never been to Owl’s Hill, this is the time to come! Wear sturdy walking shoes; cameras and binoculars welcome. This is an adults only program,

Adult Group Programs

Reserve the Russell Gathering Pavilion with its view of hills and butterfly garden or the Visitor Center overlooking the bird gardens for your club meetings and luncheons. Clubs enjoy a special rental fee of $50 for up to two hours during normal business hours.  Add one of the following programs for $30.  Programs last about an hour.  Groups wishing to arrange a program without a rental may pay the $7/person rate, with a minimum fee of $50.
 

Backyard Bird Program

This is a wonderful program for all who like to feed birds.  Information and discussion will center on local birds and how to attract them to your garden, no matter the size.  For those who are primarily interested in identification, we offer a slide show on Tennessee birds.  A short birding hike can be included.  Offered September through May.  Click here to request a date.

Bluebird Program

Putting up a Bluebird box is an act of hope and when that first pair appears, hope quickly transforms to hooked!  Will there be a nest?  Eggs?  The anticipation is hard to describe.  A narrated slide show will help you learn more about these lovely birds and how to make your own yard desirable Bluebird habitat.  A short hike on a Bluebird trail, featuring several styles of nestboxes, can be included.  Discussion will center on plantings, box styles and maintainence and other features that attract native cavity nesters. Butterfly Program

These flying jewels are a welcome addition to any yard or garden. Schedule this program and learn the simple steps to attract them to yours. The presentation includes a short butterfly walk around the Owl’s Hill meadow and gardens, including the Butterfly Garden, planted with native Tennessee plants. Topics include appropriate native plantings for host and nectar plants, the butterfly life cycle and identification of some common local caterpillars and, finally, identification of several common Middle Tennessee butterflies.  Offered  September through mid-October; April through May.   Click here to request a date.

Owl Program

What more appropriate program for Owl’s Hill than an introduction to owls? Meet the resident non-releasable owls and enjoy a presentation featuring their amazing qualities and highlighting their place in the Middle Tennessee ecosystem.  The program includes tips for spotting these feathered predators in the wild and keys to identifying their eerie calls.   A short hike through owl territory with a discussion of our hacking and release program may be added at no additional cost.  September through May.  Click here to request a date.

These programs are suitable for adults and interested older children. The ability to stand quietly for several minutes without making noise is key to a successful count.  Participants should dress for the weather and be prepared for light to moderate hiking.  Binoculars and a field guide are helpful but not required.  Use insect repellant for visits between April 1 and October 15.  Register on-line, or call 615-370-4672.
