2010 Adult Programs 2011
|
Who ever thought we would live to see a five hundred year flood? Mother Nature is reaffirming who is in charge.
Owl’s Hill was very fortunate. The owls and their exhibits are safe, as well as the buildings and the Old Trees. We did lose quite a few trees and suffer much “re-landscaping “due to erosion. Our programs are still going on and we are hard at work repairing the trails.
At Owl’s Hill we want to help everyone appreciate the beauty and majesty of nature in every form. We rely on donations, not only to help take care of the resident owls and other animals, but also to maintain the trails and help keep the price of program admissions affordable. Donations of any size are always important.
Starting June 1, we are offering a new program called Trail Walkers for adult donors who give $250 or more during our fiscal year, October12009 thru September 30, 2010. It is our way of giving a special thank you for caring about Owl’s Hill.
Donor Hours for Trail Walkers are scheduled at times when Owl’s Hill is not open for educational programs for schools, scouts or camp. We hope it will give those donors quiet time to enjoy the beauty of Owl’s Hill. After an orientation session to acquaint you with the trails open for walking and rules of the sanctuary, you are welcome to sign in and walk at the following times:
Monday-Friday, 1-9am and 2-4pm. You are welcome to bring one adult friend at these times.
First Sunday of the month 1-4 pm you may bring up to 4 family or friends of any age.

Meet a Barred Owl
What more appropriate program for Owl’s Hill than an introduction to owls? Meet the resident non-releasable owls and enjoy a presentation featuring their amazing qualities and highlighting their place in the Middle Tennessee ecosystem. The program includes tips for spotting these feathered predators in the wild and keys to identifying their eerie calls. A short hike through owl territory with a discussion of our hacking and release program may be added at no additional cost. September through May.
This is a wonderful program for all who like to feed birds. Information and discussion will center on local birds and how to attract them to your garden, no matter the size. For those who are primarily interested in identification, we offer a slide show on Tennessee birds. A short birding hike can be included. September through May.

A Nest! Eggs!

Putting up a Bluebird box is an act of hope and when that first pair appears, hope quickly transforms to hooked! Will there be a nest? Eggs? The anticipation is hard to describe. A narrated slide show will help you learn more about these lovely birds and how to make your own yard desirable Bluebird habitat. A short hike on a Bluebird trail, featuring several styles of nestboxes, can be included. Discussion will center on plantings, box styles and maintainence and other features that attract native cavity nesters. January through May.

Gray Hairstreak nectaring. N. Garden
These flying jewels are a welcome addition to any yard or garden. Schedule this program and learn the simple steps to attract them to yours. The presentation includes a short butterfly walk around the Owl’s Hill meadow and gardens, including the Butterfly Garden, planted with native Tennessee plants. Topics include appropriate native plantings for host and nectar plants, the butterfly life cycle and identification of some common local caterpillars and, finally, identification of several common Middle Tennessee butterflies. September, April and May.
Throughout the Spring Wildflower season and the Autumn Foliage season, adult groups may schedule more strenous hikes up the scenic South Ridge or Haircut Hill. These hikes last 1½ to 2 hours. April and October.
